City High didn’t have to look very far to find its new leader of the girls track and field program.

Pending approval of the school board City High graduate and Liberty High assistant coach Jeremy Mims will be the new girls track coach at City High beginning with the 2020 season.

Mims replaces Terry Coleman, who retired after a second stint leading the City High program.

Coleman retires as one of the most successful track and field coaches in state history winning seven state titles as a coach at City High, four as a head coach.

A 2001 City High graduate, Mims was a state champion during his prep career and later a two-time all-American at the University of Kansas and ran professionally for Nike from 2005-2009.

Mims was previously an assistant coach at Kansas and an assistant cross country coach at City High before spending time as an assistant at Liberty High.

“Jeremy not only brings elite, world class experience to our program that is second to none, he brings a passion and enthusiasm for track and field that is infectious,” Coleman said. “Jeremy’s strong ties to City High and our running community will only further enhance his ability to lead our program well in the future.”
