Solon Falls to Mount Vernon in Region 5 Opener

The third time wasn’t the charm for the Solon girls basketball team.

Solon fell to Mount Vernon for the third time this season 52-36 on Saturday in the opening round of the Class 3A, Region 5 tournament in Mount Vernon.

The third loss in less than a month to the Mustangs ended Solon’s season at 8-14 while No. 10 Mount Vernon advanced to the Region 5 semifinals where it will host Anamosa on Wednesday.

Kaitlyn Volesky poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Mount Vernon as the Mustangs earned their second win over Solon in 72 hours.

Mount Vernon defeated Solon 61-41 in the regular season finale for both teams on Wednesday in Solon after a 56-28 win in the first meeting between the two teams on January 13 in Mount Vernon.

Josie Durr had 22 points to pace Solon while Alli Prybil and Brianna Smith each had five for the Spartans.

Durr had seven steals in the loss and finishes the season with a state-leading 164 steals.
