Game of the Week

West High (2-0) at Dubuque Hempstead (0-0)

After opening the season with wins on back-to-back nights last week the lone action this week for defending 4A champion West High is its Mississippi Valley Conference opener at Dubuque Hempstead on Friday.

West High held off Hempstead 61-55 at home last season and enters 2-0 after defeating West Des Moines Dowling 51-42 last Thursday and Minneapolis DeLaSalle 65-62 on Friday.

Friday is the season opener for Hempstead, which is coming off an 18-6 season that included a trip to the 4A state tournament.

Other Games to Watch

Mid-Prairie at Regina: The Jared Galpin era officially opens on Tuesday as the Regals open the season with an River Valley Conference South Division tilt.

Cedar Falls at City High: The Little Hawks get a gauge of where they stack up against top competition early as the host Cedar Falls in their MVC opener on Friday.

Solon at Western Dubuque: A key early season WAMAC East Division matchup as two teams expected to contend with West Delaware for the top spot square off on Friday in Epworth.

Player to Watch

AJ Green, Sr., Cedar Falls

A top-100 national recruit and Northern Iowa signee, Green makes his lone regular season trip to Iowa City on Friday when Cedar Falls travels to City High.

If you haven’t seen Green in person he’s worth the price of admission.

The 6-foot-3 senior point guard was 8-of-10 from 3-point range on his way to a game-high 28 points in a season-opening 82-43 win over West Delaware.

Green averaged 21.5 points per game a year ago and 17.8 as a sophomore.

Who’s Hot

Beau Cornwell, Jr., West Branch

Cornwell has followed up a strong sophomore season with an impressive start to his junior campaign.

The 6-foot-2 point guard is averaging 32 points, 8.5 rebounds and five steals through two games as West Branch has opened the season 1-1.

Cornwell will face off with high-scoring Tipton senior Logan Hoffman on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4 Hoffman averaged 22.8 points per game last season and is scoring 26 per contest in two games this year.
