Game of the Week

5A No. 14 Cedar Rapids Washington at 5A No. 1 City High

The first of two meetings in less than a month between the two MVC Valley Division foes comes on Tuesday in Iowa City.

Top-ranked City High has rolled to 11 straight wins to open the year with just one game, a five-point win over No. 2 Cedar Falls, decided by single digits.

Cedar Rapids Washington has been the surprise of the MVC starting 7-3 and is one win from matching its season total from last season.

The Warriors have four players averaging double figures led by junior Sammy Mia at 15.2 points per game.

Other Games to Watch

West Branch at Mid-Prairie: The Bears closed December with a 54-50 win over Mid-Prairie and will try to complete the season sweep Friday in Wellman.

Mount Vernon at Solon: Solon has won three in a row in advance of Friday’s meeting with its Highway 1 rival.

Cedar Rapids Washington at West High: The Warriors make their second trip of the week to Iowa City on Friday to face No. 3 West High which has won four in a row since a loss to City High.

Player to Watch

Kayba Laube, Soph., Marion

The top scorer in a balanced Marion offensive attack, Laube is a big reason the Indians have rattled off 11 straight wins to open the season.

A 5-foot-9 guard, Laube leads Marion in scoring at 12.1 points per game and is shooting 49 percent from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range.

Laube also has 33 steals for top-ranked Marion which is coming off a 52-36 win over 5A No. 9 Indianola.

Who’s Hot

Cora Saunders, Soph., Liberty High

The sharpshooting Saunders leads Liberty High in scoring at 12.8 points per game and upped that to 13.5 during a four-game winning streak to close December.

Saunders has picked up where she left off in January.

The 5-foot-7 senior averaged 20 points per game in two games last week, punctuated by a career-high 23 in a loss to Clear Creek Amana on Saturday.

Saunders shot 52 percent from the field in two games last week and was 6-of-17 from 3-point range.
