Bridges in the Medal Hunt After Opening Day at State Golf

In his first trip to the state golf meet Ted Bridges is in the hunt for some hardware.

Bridges shot a six-over-par 76 on Thursday at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown and ended the opening day of the Class 2A state tournament in a tie for 10th place.

The 76 from Bridges helped West Branch shoot a 329 which puts the Bears seventh in the team standings after one day of the two-day meet.

Bridges closed day one five stroke off the leader Jared Tigges of Carroll Kuemper who shot two-under on the back nine on his way to an opening-round 71.

Tyler Merley of Sheldon and Panorama sophomore Kolby Shackelford are both one shot of the lead after shooting 72 on Thursday.

Bridges was four-over after eight holes following a bogey on the par-four eighth but closed his round with pars on eight of his final 10 holes.

After a 39 on the front nine Bridges closed with a two-over-par 37 on the back nine with seven pars and bogies on the par-three 13th and 16th.

Junior Brady Lukavsky shot an 82 for West Branch on Thursday while senior Trevor Thein fired an 85 for the Bears.

Carroll Kuemper had three golfers shot 75 or better in Thursday’s opening round and holds the lead after 18 holes with a 302.

Des Moines Christian is second with a 308 followed by PCM with a 313 and Estherville Lincoln Central with a 321.

Regina sophomore Mark Schomer is in a tie for 37th place after 18 holes and firing an 84 on Thursday.  

Play resumes on Friday at 8 a.m.
