Thunderstorms caused times changes, postponements and early endings to games around the state on Friday.

By the time storms forced West Branch and Northeast to call it quits the Bears had already put in enough work to earn a win.

Class 1A sixth-ranked West Branch scored 28 points in just more than 11 minutes to earn a 28-0 win over Northeast in a District 4 matchup in Gooselake that was called with 44 seconds left in the first quarter.

West Branch improved to 6-1 with its second consecutive win and moved to 2-1 in District 4 play while Northeast dropped to 0-7 and 0-3 in district contests.

The Bears scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions and Wyatt Goodale returned a punt 65-yards for a touchdown all in the opening 11 minutes and 10 seconds on Friday.

Tanner Lukavsky rushed for 55 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries as West Branch rolled up 69 yards on just eight plays before lightning and rain stopped play.

Before play could be resumed both teams agreed to call the game.

West Branch set a school record allowing -21 yards of offense and held the Rebels without a first down while posting its first shutout since a 47-0 win over Jesup in week three of last season.

The Bears needed just two offensive plays to take a 14-0 lead on Friday.

Brett Schiele set up a 1-yard scoring drive with a 32-yard punt return and Lukavsky opened the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run to put West Branch up 7-0.

A dropped snap on a punt gave West Branch the ball at the Northeast 2 yard line on the next possession and senior Beau Cornwell made it 14-0 with a 2-yard run.

West Branch put together it’s best drive of the game on the next possession, a 6-play, 61-yard march that was capped by a 21-yard touchdown run by Lukavsky.

Goodale capped the scoring when he returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-0 with 49 seconds left in the first quarter.

The punt return touchdown for Goodale was his fist and the fourth special teams scores of the season for West Branch.
