Patrick McCaffery concluded a prolific prep career last week at the Class 4A state tournament.

On Tuesday McCaffery was honored a final time as one of the best in the state.

McCaffery earned all-state honors for the third consecutive season on Tuesday when he was named to the Class 4A first team for the second consecutive season by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

The West High senior forward closed an impressive prep career with his best season yet.

McCaffery ranked 11th in the state and third in Class 4A in scoring as a senior averaging a career-high 25.1 points per game.

The 6-foot-8 forward shot 58 percent from the field, including a career-best 45 percent from 3-point range, and 76 from the free throw line while ranking fourth in 4A in free throws made.

McCaffery added 7.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and led West High with 23 steals while helping the Trojans to a 17-5 record and a ninth straight state tournament appearance.

A second-team all-state pick as a sophomore, McCaffery earned first-team all-state honors in each of his final two seasons.

Regina junior Masen Miller joined McCaffery as an area first-team pick after being named to the Class 2A first team.

Miller led Regina in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals while directing the Regals to a 20-3 record and their first state tournament appearance since 2015.

The 6-foot-1 point guard averaged 20.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 steals on his way to earning all-state honors for the first time.

Miller led the state with 99 3-pointers, shooting 43 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

For the first time since 1999 there was a Co-Mr. Basketball as North Linn’s Jake Hilmer and Bettendorf’s D.J. Carton both earned the award.

Hilmer averaged 26.1 points per game and led the state with 261 assists while leading North Linn to an unbeaten season and the 2A state title and is the only player in state history with 2,000 career points and 1,000 career assists.

An Ohio State signee, Carton averaged 24.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game helping Bettendorf to a 21-2 record and a number one ranking in the final 4A Associated Press poll.
